Team New Zealand was announced by managers Bevan Weal and Shayne King. Wyatt Chase (MXGP), Dylan Walsh (MX2) and Maximus Purvis (Open) will tackle the sand of Assen. Although that team may not be what most expected to see, King mentioned that this is the perfect opportunity to give the next generation valuable experience on the world stage. A statement from the former world champion is below.
"This year our focus is on the development side of the sport and it's important to work on the future to help develop more champions and give them the experience. This year with several of our top rider's currently injured or unable to ride we felt this is our chance to work with the youth of our sport and develop a stronger rider line up for the future."
A fair amount of pressure will be placed on Walsh, who will be expected to carry the team through the qualifying process. Walsh has experienced success in the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship and shown top-five speed at points, so will slot into the role of captain quite nicely.
